All Inspections

6 February 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection on 29 June 2012 we identified concerns that care plans did not always reflect the assessed needs of the people living at this home.

We told the provider that they had to make improvements. On 11 July 2012, we were forwarded an improvement plan which addressed all of the concerns raised by us following this inspection. The action plan received listed the actions to be taken by the home, to ensure that improvements were made.

The purpose of this follow up inspection, carried out on 06 February 2013, was to check that the necessary improvements had been made. We found that they had.

Care plans had undergone review to ensure that these reflected the assessed needs of the people receiving this service.

27 June 2012

During an inspection in response to concerns

We were unable to speak with many people using the service because due to cognitive impairments, such a dementia, we could not effectively communicate with them. We therefore gathered evidence of people's experiences by observing the care and support provided during the afternoon. We observed for an hour and found that staff were encouraging, respectful and caring.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Many of the people living in the home were unable to tell us what their experience of the service has been. However, we spent time listening to how staff interacted with people, we observed people engaged in their daily routines and spoke with some people and their relatives.

We found that staff were kind and respectful towards people. The atmosphere was pleasant and staff were attending to people's needs in a kind and caring way. One person visiting the home told us that staff support their relative well and they felt welcome when they visited. Another visitor we spoke with told us that the service had improved recently and they felt their relative was receiving better care now. Other people using the service told us that staff were kind and caring. One person said everyone was very kind and another said some staff were better than others.

We observed that staff interacted positively with people and supported them well when needed. People were offered choices and staff supported people to make decisions about what they wanted to do. For example, where they wanted to sit or the activities they may wish to participate in.

People told us that the food was good. They said that they were offered a choice of meals and staff asked them what they wanted to eat. Two other people were heard saying that the vegetables were hard to eat.

We observed people to mobilise around the home and enjoy a variety of places to sit. We heard some people commenting on how hot it was in the conservatory and some people talking about how nice it was to sit in the garden.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People using the service with whom we spoke have dementia to varying degrees of severity. Some people were not able to verbally express their view about the overall standard of care they received.

One person using the service told us that the food was 'ok' and that staff helped them when they needed. When we told one other person who we were and what our role was they declined to say anything.

We spoke with two relatives who came into the home during our visit. One person told us that they were pleased with the care provided to their relative and they had settled in very well. The other person told us that they visited frequently and thought the service had improved since the new manager came into post. They told us that they did not think that staffing levels were good enough and their relative did not receive enough activity and stimulation. They also said that on occasions their relative was found to have soiled clothing on or to be dressed in a manner that was inconsistent with their wishes.

Staff told us they liked working at the home and were keen to make improvements to the service provided.
