During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit, there were nine people living at this service. We met with six people, who all told us that they were treated well. One person said "the staff treat me like a queen', whilst another person told us 'the staff can't do enough for us'.

People told us that they liked being at this service. One person told us 'I chose to come here because I knew it was good". Each person told us that their privacy was respected at all times. One person said 'it's very nice to see people being so kind and thoughtful these days'. People also said that staff supported them to be independent. One person told us 'I do what I can and all the staff are very encouraging when I struggle'.

People said they were asked for their opinions every day, in relation to the care and support they received from staff. This was confirmed by our observations throughout the visit. One person told us that "staff help me to do things myself". One person said "staff listen to me when I need to tell them something's not quite right'.

People told us that the food was good. One person said "the food is very tasty. It's cooked on the premises and if we change our minds, they always offer us something else".

The service had policies and procedures in place that kept people safe. Staff were knowledgeable about their safeguarding responsibilities and how they would respond to any concerns that may arise at any time.

The manager monitored quality by use of audits and questionnaires and had an effective system that identified and addressed complaints.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who lived in Barton Lodge, one person who used the day service and a relative. They all told us that they liked being at Barton Lodge. One person told us 'its extremely good here, they will do anything for you,' another said 'it's a lovely place to be'.

They told us that the food was very nice and there was always plenty of it. One person said 'the food is marvellous, couldn't be better'. One person we spoke with did say that they got bored from time to time but said they would ask staff to find an activity for them.

We spoke with three staff and the manager. The staff told us that they felt supported and that there was an 'open door policy' for any issues or concerns. Two staff commented on the family atmosphere of the home and how well everyone got on.

The manager had an effective system to identify and address risks to people who use the service and others.
