During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with people who lived at the service, three staff and with others who had regular contact with the home to ask for their comments and observations. The feedback we received about people's experience of life at the home was mixed.

One person told us they had been asked about their care needs prior to their admission but had not been asked since. 'The staff fill in a form with questions that I've answered, but no-one's sat with me to explain what will happen next.'

One person said they would prefer to have their breakfast at an earlier time but had been told it was impossible to do this.

One person told us they thought they were at risk of developing pressure sores and although they had a pressure relieving cushion, they had not been told why it was important to sit on it and they were using it for other purposes.

People told us: 'The staff are friendly, they pop their head round the door and ask if I'm ok'. 'The staff only know my needs when I tell them.' 'There is a care plan but I've never seen it and I've not been asked to sign it.' 'I've been laid in bed and the buzzers are going off left, right and centre and there's only two staff on duty.'

During an inspection in response to concerns

Some people were unable to, or chose not to tell us about their experiences, as they either lacked capacity or did not wish to comment.

A person that we spoke with told us that they do not always receive timely support if there is insufficient staff on duty, or the gender preferred for personal care.

One person that spoke to us said that some staff 'go that extra mile' and others 'do only as much as they need to'. They told us that they are able to make decisions for themselves and the staff support them in the way that they prefer.

A person told us that they deal with any problems that arise at the time with the members of staff concerned; however there are some issues which they remain concerned about, such as personal hygiene.

During our site visit we spoke to a number of people using the service. We have not referred to those discussions in detail within this report, as we have not used them to influence our judgement on this occasion.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who we spoke with who use the service in the nursing unit could not tell us about their experiences, as they either lacked capacity or did not wish to comment.

In the residential unit, people told us that the care they receive is given in a way that is respectful of their privacy and dignity. They told us that they are sometimes involved in their care planning and reviews, but that this is not always recorded on the documentation.

They also told us that staff do support them, but that sometimes 'we may have to wait for help if they are busy". They told us that they did not feel that staffing levels were low. One person said "staff who help me are trained to understand my needs and I feel confident they can provide care safely," and another person said that they believe 'all staff are recruited carefully by the centre".
