During a routine inspection

We spoke to fourteen people who use the service, eight relatives or friends of people who use the service, four staff members, one visiting professional and the manager during our two unannounced visits to Kingston Care Home.

To help us to understand the experiences people have, we used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool during this visit. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people spend their time, the type of support they get and whether they have positive experiences.

Overall comments from people who use the service about Kingston Care Home included 'I think it's very good', 'very nice', 'excellent' and 'I enjoy it'.

The people we spoke with were satisfied with the care and support being provided to them. Feedback included 'I like the company', 'they give me a nice wash every day', 'they listen' and 'care means what it says here'.

Relatives or friends visiting the service were positive about the care and support being provided. Three individuals told us that the service had improved from a year ago with comments including 'it's better than it has been' and 'the manager is efficient and proficient'. A visiting professional shared this view telling us that the home had improved under the current manager.

During a routine inspection

Comments about the service included 'It's quite a nice place', 'I like it' 'they're alright here', 'everybody is so kind', 'great' and 'fine'. One person using the service told us it was 'a lovely place' whilst two visitors individually said they were 'very happy 'and 'very satisfied' with the service being provided to the person they knew.

People told us that they generally enjoyed the food provided to them. Feedback included 'the food is very good', 'I eat it all', 'very nice', 'not bad at all' and 'the food is smashing'. Other comments included 'the food is great although I haven't a clue what's for lunch' and 'quite good'.

Comments about staff included 'the staff are lovely', they're alright ' a very nice girl just helped me out', 'polite', 'the staff are very nice' and 'the staff are wonderful ' they don't row or holler'. Other feedback included 'we get on very well', 'some are nice, and some are impatient' and 'quite nice'.

Some individuals said they would like to do more. Comments included 'we do very little' and 'we don't do anything ' just go to the toilet'. A visitor commented that they would like to see 'more activity and stimulation' and 'we'd like them to get out more'.

Significant improvements have been made to the service provided on the top floor of the home. This area had a very calm and relaxed atmosphere when we visited with people sitting in both lounges as well as in seating areas along the corridors. Some very positive interactions were noted between staff and people who use the service.

Whilst people told us that they were treated with dignity and respect by care staff, our observations of the care provided on the first floor of the home in particular identified some clear areas for improvement. The home needs to make sure that individual privacy and dignity is consistently respected.
