Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider treated people with kindness and respect. People and relatives said staff were warm and caring. One relative said, "The love and care are amazing." We saw positive interactions between people and staff that demonstrated a relaxed and natural relationship. People did not have to wait long for support when needed and staff spent time chatting to people, we observed lots of laughter. Staff avoided negative labels and used respectful language when speaking to people. At times language in care plans used institutional language. We spoke with the registered manager about this and they agreed to review and update care plans.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider made sure care met each person’s needs and preferences. People were offered choices about all aspects of daily living. People who preferred quieter activities were included in meaningful ways. One person said, "I just love the children having lost both of my daughters and with no grandchildren I am so happy to see them." Relatives were involved in reviews and staff knew people well. A relative told us the benefits of supporting people to maintain relationships while living at the care service. They said, "Both of my [family members] are now safer than they have been for ages and being together means that they can be there for each other."

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence and people could make their own choices about their care and how they spent their time. People had access to a wide variety of opportunities both in the service and in the local community. The activity co-ordinator had discussed everyone’s preference with them and arranged places to visit of that interested them such as local clubs, bowls, cinema, meals, and days out. One relative said, "My [family member] loves their pampering it is costing me a fortune but are worth it." Staff encouraged people to do what they could for themselves for example at meals times and when supporting with personal care. Being in control of their care and having opportunities to take part in activities they enjoyed meant people were confident and able to develop relationships in the community. A relative said "My [family member] is happier, calmer and more stable thanks to their care."

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. Staff had a good awareness of signs to look for that might suggest someone was becoming distressed and they monitored these throughout the day, sharing information during handovers for follow up if concerned. Staff worked well with local health services if people became unwell and called emergency service without delay where required. A relative told us staff acted quickly to seek medical support when their family member fell and contacted the relative straight away to keep them informed of what had happened.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they felt supported by the registered manager and reported positive relationships across the team. The provider was flexible in their approach to support adjustments to workloads when needed to help staff to manage staff wellbeing. Staff told us they could contact the registered manager at any time if they had a query or concern and felt confident they would be listened to.
