All Inspections

22 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We visited Puttenhoe Residential Care Home on 11 and 22 July 2013. At the time of our inspection there were 26 people were living in the home. We spoke with six of the 26 people, who all said they were very happy living there, and felt cared for. One person said: "I get all the help I need.' Another person told us 'The staff are so very good. I'm very lucky to be here and have all this care.'

During our inspection we saw evidence that people's nutritional requirements were assessed and managed in line with their needs, and that these were reviewed on a regular basis.

We looked at the environment to ensure people were protected against the risks associated with unsafe or unsuitable premises. A recent refurbishment of the home had been completed and we saw many improvements as a result of this.

We spoke with three staff on duty who all told us they enjoyed working at Puttenhoe Residential Care Home. They said they felt supported by the manager and deputy manager, and the staffing numbers were adequate to meet people's needs.

We reviewed the systems in place for managing complaints should they arise, and saw that clear procedures provided guidance for people living in the home, relatives and staff.

25 January 2011

During a routine inspection

During our visit to the home on 25 January 2011 we looked at the care files of three residents. We spoke with two of these people in addition to many others living in the home. We also observed the care provided. Care plans indicated that people choose the name that they wished to be called by and observation indicated that people were able to make choices about how their care was provided.

One person using the service told us that she could remain in her room and was particularly grateful that she could have visitors at anytime and could leave the home and spend time with her family whenever she wanted. All of the people that we spoke with told us that they were happy with the care that they received and that the staff were very nice. We received comments such as 'they look after me well'.

We received information from one relative who told us that staff had not followed the plan of care he believed had been agreed for his relative, and that, as a result, she had reached out, spilt a drink and been scalded. At the time of this review this incident was the subject of a safeguarding investigation

People using the service and relatives that we spoke with told us that they would know who to complain to if they were unhappy with the care that was provided. A visitor told us that staff were approachable and if they had any concerns they would address them at the time with whomever they spoke to.
