During a routine inspection

During our visit to Parkside Residential Home we spoke with eight people using the service and four staff members currently working at the home. In addition we spoke with a visiting health care professional. We observed positive interactions between staff and people living in the home, and saw that staff understood the needs of the people they were supporting. People told us they were happy living at Parkside Residential Home.

Care files were detailed, regularly reviewed and relevant for people's assessed needs. A visiting healthcare professional told us that things had improved since the new manager had been in post and communication was 'much better.'

Improvements had been made to the environment, with new flooring and deep cleaning of toilets, the laundry and kitchen areas. Our observations of the home noted that the home was clean with no offensive odours.

The home had been redecorated with new flooring. People told us they liked the improvements to the home.

We noted that not all health monitoring records had been fully completed.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 08 November 2012 we spoke with five people using the service and one visiting relative. We were told that people were happy with the staff and the way they helped them. One person said, 'If I need anything the staff will always go out of their way to help me.' Staff we spoke with told us that the majority of people using the service needed two staff to attend to their personal care. We were told that this meant some people often had to wait for staff to respond to their nurse call bell.

A relative informed us that the staff were very knowledgeable and made them feel comfortable when visiting the home. One person new to the home said the home was very nice and they were happy to be there and bring in their own belongings. 'It makes it feel more like home.'

During our observations we noted that most areas of the home were in a reasonable state of repair. However the toilet areas downstairs were bare and unattractive. They had heavily stained floors and in some areas of the toilets the flooring was coming away from the side of the wall. This could present an infection control risk. In addition we observed that there were two sluice rooms which had no hand washing facilities. We were informed that this was work which was due to be undertaken in the near future.

We looked at four care files for people using the service. We saw that records did not always detail the care and treatment people needed for staff to fully meet their needs.

24 October 2011

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with three people in private. We also spoke with one visitor and a group of people in one of the lounges.

Several people commented, "The staff are very good here".

One person we spoke with said, "The staff don't rush me, and when I ring for help and they're busy, they tell me, although I don't have to wait for long".

Another person we spoke with told us, "There is not always enough staff".

After speaking to people and staff, we spoke with the deputy manager and checked five outcomes that support the care, safety and welfare of people living in the home.
