During a routine inspection

When we inspected Ferndale Residential Home we spoke with six people who used the service and six members of staff, including the registered manager.

We found that people who use the service, and staff and visitors were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises. One person said, 'I feel very much at home, you've only got to report it and it's seen to.' Another person said, 'I have my room loaded with...'just how I like it.' One member of staff said, 'Repairs are done as soon as they can be done.'

We found that appropriate recruitment checks were undertaken before staff began work. Comments and complaints people made were responded to appropriately. The people that we spoke with told us they knew how to raise a concern or complaint and said, 'I wouldn't change anything here it's really lovely'..they're (staff) marvellous and if I had a complaint they'd help me.' Another person said, 'I've no reason not to be happy and contented.'

We found that records were kept securely and could be located promptly when needed. Staff that we spoke with told us the various reasons why they kept records, one staff member said, 'So that we can have a check, so that there is a paper trail to be able to follow.'

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Everyone we spoke with told us they were happy with the care provided and staff were kind to them. People told us that their choices were respected and that staff were very helpful.

People told us they were well looked after by staff, who were very helpful and kind and a visiting relative said the staff were wonderful.

We had varied feedback about the activities in the home. Two people told us that activities did not take place very often. Another person disagreed and described the activities they had undertaken the previous day.

A visiting relative told us that the staff were fantastic but staffing numbers were not sufficient.

28 February 2012

During a routine inspection

During our visit on 28 February 2012 we spoke with a group of people living in the home. They all agreed that the staff were respectful and that they were encouraged to make their own choices whenever possible. One person told us that they felt that their privacy was not respected as staff were always encouraging them to spend time in the lounge rather than in their bedroom. We observed staff supporting people and this was done in a respectful and kind manner.

Another person who we spoke with told us that they had to wait a long time for staff to respond to the call bell. We spoke with two visitors who said that they were very pleased with the care being provided to their relative.

During our visit we spent time observing in the lounges and dining room. There were long periods of time when there were no staff within the lounge areas. In contrast, there were also times when staff were available and there was lots of laughter and positive communication between staff and people living in the home.
