During an inspection looking at part of the service

We completed this compliance review to check whether changes had been made in areas of concern identified at the previous compliance review completed in March 2011.

We found that the staff who had managed the home at the time of the Care Quality Commission compliance review in March 2011 had changed. The new management team were in the process of responding to the findings of that review, however, these changes were not as yet embedded into the service.

We found that, in the main, people who used the service and their relatives felt improvements had occurred, particularly in relation to meals, activities and the environment. One person however felt that the food had not improved.

Overall we found that additional evidence was needed before we could assess the service as fully compliant in relation to the Health and Social Care Act (HSCA) 2008 in the following essential standards of quality and safety: care and welfare of people who use the service and meeting nutritional needs.

We found, however, that the service was now compliant with the standards: cleanliness and infection control and complaints.

During a routine inspection

People living at Bamford Grange told us that they liked living at the home and that they were pleased that their relatives lived there.

They said:

'In a nut shell I'm glad she's here'

'He's contented'

and

'I'm happy here.'

People confirmed that the health care provided meets their needs and that they are kept informed about what is happening.

They said

'The care is very good.'

We were told that the staff were pleasant and helpful:

'They've looked after him very well- the girls help me out in every way.'

People living at the Bamford Grange also said that in some respects the food provided could be improved and that activities for people who are more dependent should be increased.

Comments about these issues included:

'The food's not bril' but there's enough'

and

'Activities seem to have fallen off.'

Over all, however, people told us that they felt safe and confident with staff and enjoyed living at the home.

'It's comfortable and staff are very nice'

and

'I feel safe with staff and residents.'
