All Inspections

11 June 2013

During a routine inspection

The inspection was carried out by one Inspector over six hours. During this time we viewed all areas of the home; and met and talked with people living in the home, and observed staff giving them care. We also talked with two relatives and friends, and with six staff as well as the manager. As some people were unable to converse clearly with us due to their dementia, we spent some time in the lounge carrying out an observational inspection. We also read care plans, and looked at a variety of documentation.

We found that people were content and felt comfortable living in the home. People's comments included: 'Yes, I like it here' and 'The staff are very kind.' Friends and relatives said 'It is very good here, I do not have any concerns'; and 'It is a nice family feel here, there is lots of laughter and kindness.'

We found that care plans and associated risk assessments had been brought up to date, and were specific to the person concerned.

People said that they enjoyed the food and there was 'plenty of it.'

We found that the provider had taken action to deal with issues raised about infection control at our last inspection. A visitor said 'The home is always nice and clean.'

We found that the home had robust procedures in place for staff recruitment and staff training.

People's views were obtained on an ongoing basis, and we found that these were taken into account and used to make improvements in the home.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke to people using the service and their relatives. They told us that they were happy in their home and that they felt the staff were caring and sensitive to their needs. One person said, "The staff are very approachable and deal with any issues. I feel that my relative is 100% safe with them". Another person said, "The staff here are very good, they have to put up with a lot but they do it well". We found that staff approached people in a patient and sensitive manner, but that there were times when people's care and support needs were overlooked so that there was a risk to the welfare of people using the service. We found that there were failures to maintain an environment which adequately controlled the risks associated with the spread and prevention of infection. We also found that although staff received appropriate training, records did not confirm whether staff were adequately supervised and appraised in their role.
