During an inspection looking at part of the service

We found that the provider had completed the action they told us they would take in relation to the storage and maintenance of records.

People told us, "I had an injection" and "I hurt myself but I'm all right now." We found that both of these things had been recorded appropriately.

We found that people's personal records appeared complete and up to date and were securely stored. Financial transaction records were complete and corresponded with the balance of money stored at the home.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to two people using the service and three members of staff. People told us they were supported to take part in a number of activities. One person said "I'm going to the pictures today." We observed staff engaging people in activities. People said they were happy with the care provided. One person told us "It's all right [here]. I've got a new TV." The home was well decorated and spacious with several communal areas. Two people showed us their bedrooms, which were personalised.

Staff said they were happy working for this organisation and that they were supported in their professional development. We saw evidence that staff received supervision and annual appraisals and had been supported to take on additional responsibilities and more senior roles.

Staff received training and were aware of the arrangements in place to safeguard people from abuse. We found evidence that allegations of abuse were dealt with appropriately. We observed staff administering medication and found the procedure was followed and medicines were stored appropriately.

We found the majority records were up to date and accurate, although some were dated incorrectly or overdue for review. Some records were missing in relation to people's personal spending money. Most records were stored appropriately, but some files containing confidential personal information were not stored securely.

14 February 2013

During a routine inspection

On the day of the inspection there were five people at the home. One person went out for half the day for an appointment and another person went for a walk to the shops.

Two people were verbal and three people were non verbal and unable to talk to us about the way they were treated or if they were happy with their care, but we observed that they were relaxed when they were being supported and we observed people either watching the TV, listening to a CD or engaged in an activity in the dining room.

One person at the home told us they were looking forward to visiting the family and that they liked having their nails painted. Another person at the home told they were going to a party that was being held by the provider shortly.

We saw that people were treated with respect and were involved in activities throughout the home. We looked at people's care plans and saw that they were individual to people's needs and used picture format where possible to involve them in the process.

People in the home were safe and staff were knowledgeable in safeguarding the people they cared for and knew how to report abuse.

The provider audited the service regularly and carried out daily checks to ensure the service was operating correctly. Team meetings were held with staff and with people in the home.
