During a routine inspection

People using the service made positive comments about the care they received from the staff at South Tyneside Home Care Associates. One person told us 'I'm quite satisfied.' Another person told us 'Very happy with it.'

We found that the consent of people using the service was obtained and that people received the care and support that they needed. The service provided safe and appropriate care because individual needs were established before people started using the service. One person told us 'They always ask if I'm happy.'

The service had an effective recruitment and selection procedure in place and carried out relevant checks when recruiting staff.

The manager had systems in place to regularly check the quality of the care and people's comments and complaints were listened to and acted on effectively.

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. We asked people

to tell us what it was like to receive services from this home care agency as part of a

targeted inspection programme of domiciliary care agencies, paying particular regard to

how people's dignity was upheld and how they could make choices about their care. The

inspection team was led by an inspector from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), joined by an expert by experience who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service.

As part of this review, we visited four people in their own homes and spoke with them

about their experiences of the support they had received from this service. We also met

with two relatives of people who used the service. At the time of our visit to the service,

we spoke with the manager and one senior care worker. We spoke with 17 people who use the service and five care workers by telephone.

Most of the people we spoke with told us that their care was provided in the way they wanted it to be. In addition, the care workers treated them in a respectful manner and they were informed if there was a change to their care workers. One person commented, "' the senior visits me every few months and checks that I am happy with my care and she asks if I have any complaints or problems'.

The people we spoke with told us that they felt safe with the care workers and if they had concerns, they would inform the agency or speak to a member of their family. One person told us 'I would ring the office and tell ' (a senior care worker) she would sort it out'.
