During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with three out of five people using the service and two members of staff. The manager advised that the re-decoration/refurbishment of the premises has been a positive experience but was unsettling for service users living at Abandale Lodge. People we spoke with told us that they had not found the refurbishment disruptive or difficult. They told us they were 'happy' with the changes. One person told us that the environment, 'was a lot better.'

During a routine inspection

People using the service told us the care was good and that staff gave them support. Their comments included: 'I'm well looked after.' 'Staff are encouraging, friendly and supportive.'

We found the provider had systems in place for gaining people's consent to care and treatment.

We found that because appropriate measures were not being taken to ensure that the premises were adequately maintained, service users and others were not protected against the risks associated with unsafe and unsuitable premises and its operation.

We found that the provider did not have effective systems designed to regularly assess and monitor the quality of the services and that some care plans needed reviewing to ensure people's needs and risks were current.

14 November 2012

During a routine inspection

Four people using the service told us they felt safe and happy living at Abandale Lodge. People told us that staff supported them with their care needs and helped them to access community resources.

We saw that people appeared relaxed and comfortable with staff and others living in the home.

One person told us, 'I love it here and hope to spend the rest of my life here.' Another person said, 'The food is very good.'

People using the service told us they felt staff were supportive and approachable. Four staff told us that being a small team they supported one another and felt the managers were approachable.

We considered that the provider did not have some effective systems to assess and monitor the services provided and environment, which could pose risks.
