13 February 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection on 13 February 2013, we used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because some people had complex needs which meant they were not always able to talk to us about their experiences. We spoke with, or observed the care provided to, three people using the service and we spoke with two members of staff, including the manager.

At the time of our visit a consultation process was underway in respect of a proposal to change the service from a care home to a supported living service. We met a social worker and advocate who talked about their roles in supporting the people living at the home during this time.

The service had systems in place to ensure people's view were listened to and taken into account. People demonstrated that they were aware of the proposed changes and there was evidence that they had received appropriate support in understanding what the changes might mean for them.

Staff supported people to ensure they had their medicines at the times they needed them and in a safe way.

We observed some good interaction between staff and people using the service, which showed that staff understood the needs of the people they were supporting and how best to communicate with them. People were encouraged to maintain their independence as far as possible.

A complaints system was in place, to enable people to raise concerns if they needed to.

16 December 2011

During a routine inspection

People we spoke with during our visit on 16 December 2011 told us they were very happy living at Stagsden Road. They said they enjoyed going out into the community to various activities including day centres, shopping and bowling. We saw that lots of the information was provided in pictorial format, for people who cannot read. For example, people's support plans, meeting minutes and menus. Staff communicated with people using signs and words to ensure they understood what was happening.

We saw staff speaking to people in a kind and caring way and giving people time to understand what was being said to them.
