During a routine inspection

The service provided support to parents and families of children who had life threatening or terminal illness. Therefore we undertook telephone surveys with parents of people who used the service.

We made telephone calls to 18 people but were only able to have discussions with eight. They told us that an assessment of need was undertaken from which a care plan was written. One parent told us, 'I was involved in the process of writing the care plan and telling the service the support we required.'

Parents told us that medication was not administered by staff at the service. They stated that the family support workers were very good and would do most things they requested.

Parents told us that they had completed a questionnaire for the service. They also told us that they received regular telephone calls from the manager and family support workers at the service.

People told us they knew who to make a complaint to. All the people we spoke with told us that they had never had to make a complaint. They stated that the support they received from the service was excellent and family support workers were always pleasant, polite and respected them and their family members.

During a routine inspection

We undertook telephone surveys with four families who used the service. Parents of people who used the service told us that they made choices about how and what type of care and treatment they required. They told us the care package they required had to be flexible as the needs of their child often changed. They told us that they had an assessment of their needs undertaken before they used the service and that they were fully included in the process. They told us that the care package they received was flexible and they could amend the care plan as and when required.

Parents of people who used the service told us that they always felt safe with the staff who attended to them. One parent told us, 'Staff are very friendly and they know my children well. My children enjoy being with the member of staff allocated to us.'

Parents told us that they thought the staff were trained as they were always confident in carrying out their duties. One person told us, 'The member of staff who visits us is fantastic. We would not have got through the difficult times without her support.'

Family support workers work with children who could be terminally ill or have life threatening illnesses. Part of their work included attending to the personal care needs that included dealing with bodily fluids at times. We identified that staff had not received training in regard to infection control. This was discussed with the manager and head of care during the inspection.
