During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. At the time of the inspection people who used the service had limited or no verbal communication. In the majority of cases people's behaviour would indicate their responses. A small team of staff worked with each person, in order to build up a relationship with the individual. Therefore staff really knew what their behaviours meant and whether they were agitated.

On the first day of our inspection we accompanied the manager who was judging a hanging basket competition. The baskets had been made by individual service users. The hanging baskets had been done by the service user. We visited 15 people in their own homes who used the service in order to speak with them about their care and observe their interactions with staff. We spoke with the manager and six staff at the time of our visit to the office and during the visits to people's home. We also consulted with eight staff over the telephone and seven relatives.

One person confirmed they liked the staff and felt safe when they were around. We saw people were treated with respect. People were relaxed and calm. We saw that staff knew each individual well and that interactions between people who used the service and staff were good, often with good humour.
