During an inspection looking at part of the service

Following our inspection on 07 November 2012, we had issued one warning notice as we judged that the provider had failed to comply with regulations 23(1)(a)(b) of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations.

We carried out this inspection to check that the provider had taken appropriate steps to comply with the warning notice. We found that there was improvement with regard to the regulation.

At the time of our visit, there were three people using the service. We observed staff interacting with them in a kind and courteous manner. The language and tone of voice used by staff when talking to people using the service was always appropriate and was clearly intended to put people at their ease.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Grace & Favour Residential Care Home was previously registered to provide care for up to fifteen older people with dementia. They changed their registration in October 2012 and were now registered for nine younger adults between the ages of 18 to 65 with mental health needs.

Overall, people we spoke with told us that they were happy with the care that they receive. One person told us 'It's nice here, I like it. I go out twice a week with the nurse, to the shops. The food is nice I always like it. I have a nice room, I'm quite comfortable'.

People were observed to be treated with respect by staff and to have their privacy and dignity respected.

When we visited there were three older people living in the home. We were told by the deputy manager that their relatives had been contacted to look for alternatives accommodation for them. However we were told that one of the residents had mental health needs. The management was in discussion with the placement authority to see if the resident could stay in the home as they were over 65 years old.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with some of the people who use this service and they confirmed that they were quite happy however, they all had varying degrees of dementia and communication with them was difficult. In order to try to assess their experiences we spent some time in the sitting room with them using a tool called The Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). This helps us to gain an insight into peoples general mood and engagement levels.

During an inspection in response to concerns

The majority of the people who live in this home experience difficulties with communication due to their complex needs and advanced dementia. When we visited most of them were quite sleepy, having just had their lunch however, some of them spoke with us and told us that they were 'quite happy', and 'comfortable here'.

19 October 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

During our visit we saw people being treated well and general feedback about the care was very positive. Some relatives were very complimentary. They said it was very homely, lovely atmosphere. Staff were always friendly and welcoming they were always offered tea and they had time to chat. Their only concern was lack of stimulation. This was discussed with the manager who agreed to look into this issue.

During a routine inspection

Overall, people we met told us that staff always treated them well and listened to what they had to say. Comments included, 'they are good to me' and 'I like it here'. We also spoke with a relative that was visiting who told us that the care in the home was very good and any issues that arose would be addressed promptly. All of the people who currently live in this home appeared to be happy and looked well cared for. Care staff in the home know all of the residents very well and are aware of their individual preferences, needs and dislikes.
