During a routine inspection

People we spoke with during our visit communicated either with words or physical signs. Those who wanted to talk with us communicated that they were happy living at the home. Some people have limited spoken communication but we were helped to understand by the staff who knew peoples' preferred communication methods.

Some people that live in the home have complex behaviours that challenge services and appropriate care and support is provided to meet these needs. All of the people that live in the home have significant though varied care needs. We saw that the service had enough staff on duty throughout each day to support the people that lived at the home, to have a good quality of life.

The staff ensure through the way they deliver care and support that everyone's human rights, privacy and dignity are respected and protected. For example we saw staff talking with people in a respectful manner and we saw support being offered with sensitivity and care.

We heard about peoples daily activities and read about how everyone that lives in the home goes out of the home to enjoy their community. Each person that uses the service has a fulfilling and active lifestyle.

The people that live at the home are routinely offered choice in all aspects of their daily lives. People consent to each part of their care and support.

When people that live at the home have health needs they are supported to access health services. They also have the option of not using health services if they have the capacity to make such an informed decision. If they do not have the capacity to make such a decision the service makes sure that good processes are followed so that appropriate decisions are made on their behalf. These processes always involve professional and independent support from outside the service.

None of the people that live in the home can manage their own medication. The service was managing everyone's medicines safely.

We saw that the home was generally clean and hygienic. We saw that the care home was generally being adequately maintained and that the vast majority of the home gave a pleasant place for people to live. The main area of concern we had was about the lower ground floor corridor which had suffered flooding. Since our visit we have been told that this corridor has been fitted with new flooring and that it will be redecorated in the near future.

The staff that are employed by the provider have been properly recruited and are well trained. This training helps staff to deliver good quality care, safely.

The service has appropriate safeguarding procedures and the staff team are aware of how to use the protection of vulnerable adults systems. There is a complaints system in place should it be needed.
