During a routine inspection

People using the service told us they liked living at Haslingden Hall and Lodge. Most people made positive comments about the staff team and the care they provided. One person said, 'Staff are very nice if they can help you they will.'

We found that people felt confident to express any concerns. Members of staff had a good understanding of safeguarding procedures and knew the action they must take if abuse was suspected or witnessed.

We found that suitable arrangements were in place for the safe keeping and handling of medicines.

Members of told us they received the training they needed in order to provide safe and appropriate care for people using the service.

We noted that systems were in place to monitor the quality of the service provided. There was evidence to demonstrate that people were regularly consulted about all aspects of the care and facilities provided at the home.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

The manager submitted a provider compliance assessment (PCA) which provided information about how the service was complying with outcome 17, complaints. This told us that anyone who made a complaint was treated with respect and their complaint was taken seriously and investigated.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Improvements have been made since the last inspection. This included more leisure activities, increased involvement of people using the service and their relatives in care planning and further training for members of staff on caring for people with a dementia.

During the inspection we observed members of staff engaging people in conversation in a courteous and friendly manner. People described the staff team as 'wonderful', 'very nice' and 'good'.

People told us they liked living at the home their comments included, 'It's lovely' 'It's a very nice place to live' 'It's all very nice and I have no complaints'.

All the people we asked told us the meals were good.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Some of the people we asked said they liked living at the home. One person said, "It's very nice."One visitor told us the care workers were excellent. However one person said, "Some staff don't know how to speak to you, they shout a lot." Another person said, "They pull me, they're not gentle."

We asked people what they did all day and one person said, 'I sit here, there's not a lot to do.' Another person said, 'You have to just sit where you are, they don't organise anything.'

Several people told us the meals were good and they were given a choice for all meals. One person said the puddings were good but he was bored with the same soup.

The people we asked said they could choose when to get up and go to bed.

During a routine inspection

The people we spoke to told us that they liked living at the home. One person said, 'Everything's nice, I'm really happy here.'

People told us the staff are very nice and helpful. One person said, 'I'm well looked after.'

We spoke with four people who lived in the home about their medicines. One person said that care workers looked after them really well and always made sure she took her medicines properly. Another person said care workers were kind and always made sure their creams were applied every day.

People said they could choose when to get up and go to bed.

We asked two people what they did all day and one person replied. "Nothing much". The other person said, "We're mostly left to our own devices."

All the people we asked said the food was good and they had a choice of menu for all meals. We were also told that visitors were welcomed at anytime. One visitor said, "There's some lovely staff."
