Learning, improvement and innovation
The provider had a strong focus on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation and local system. They always encouraged creative ways of delivering equality of experience, outcome and quality of life for people. They actively contributed to safe, effective practice and research.
The provider demonstrated an excellent level of investment in the service, which showed people and staff they were valued, and proactively led to positive outcomes. Despite the small size of the care home, the provider ensured there was a full-time registered manager and deputy manager on site. The registered manager told us, “We are so lucky with the director, they are so supportive we can go to [them] at any time.” The director supported the service with monthly provider meetings, as well as hiring a consultant to regularly visit the service and provide a further layer of external quality assurance and oversight. The consultant told us, “I work extremely well with the registered manager, who wants to achieve the best outcome for people ensuring they fulfil their goals and aspirations.” This ensured there was sufficient management resource available to oversee the quality and safety of the service to a high standard, whilst also undertaking additional learning and improvement work. This learning culture benefitted the whole staff team. A staff member told us, “This continuous learning really helps us stay confident and competent in providing the best possible care.”
The registered manager and staff were taking part in a long-term local authority quality improvement initiative, to benefit the service itself but also to inform pilot work for other providers to learn from. A professional who worked with the service told us, “The service's engagement has been exceptional” and “the service has demonstrated a high level of commitment to the improvement process and has consistently engaged with quality improvement initiatives.” The registered manager had also proactively sought out specialist accreditation for the care home, for example in relation to promoting excellent standards of oral health. Another professional who worked with the service told us, “The setting has demonstrated that it acts on recommendations, shares clear information, works effectively with partners, and is committed to supporting residents’ oral health and quality of life.” At the time of our inspection, the service had been nominated for a local authority award for care homes, set up to recognise achievements and successes in delivering excellent care.
