During a routine inspection

The people using the service who were able to tell us said that they were happy living in the home. They told us that they were encouraged to make their own decisions about their daily lifestyles and about things that were important to them.

Comments included, "the staff always ask me before doing anything and always make sure I am happy with things."

"I can choose what I do each day, I go to the shop with staff most days and I can make a cup of tea whenever I like.'

The people who were being cared for in beds appeared clean, tidy and comfortable. Comments such as "this is a lovely place to live" "really good, food is very nice if basic,and fabulous staff" and " it is a great place to live."

People spoken with said that they would always tell the manager or deputy if there was anything wrong and one person said "it is lovely nothing wrong here" .

During a routine inspection

The people we spoke with said that they liked living in Croftwood and could make choices about how they spent their day. They said that staff treated them well, were very good and were all very positive about living there. They told us that they know all the staff as they had been there for a long time and that they were all very respectful and always knocked on their bedroom door and waited to be invited in.One person told us, "'the staff are lovely and know what I like.'

Everyone we chatted to was positive about the support provided. Comments such as ' the staff care for me very well' ' the staff know me and what I like.' Were made by people living at the home. Relatives spoken with said ' you cant fault it here , the staff are marvellous.' another said ' they care for my relative vey well and also support me, I come every day'

People told us that they feel safe and have no concerns about the care and treatment they receive from staff. People said they could talk to the manager at any time and she would sort anything out. The staff on duty who we spoke with said that they felt supported in their role.

Staff told us that they received regular training updates and we saw evidence of this in staff files. Staff told us that the manager of the home was "very approachable" and that they enjoyed being part of the staff team at Croftwood .

During a routine inspection

We spoke to eight people using the service. They all said that the staff are respectful towards their wishes and feelings and treat them with dignity. They also told us the staff team are supportive and helpful. Some comments made were;

'The girls are very good and look after me well'.

'When I'm not feeling well they get the doctor to come and see me which is better than me having to try and get to the surgery'.

'The same girl helps me when I have a bath and if she's not in theirs one other girl who helps me. I like to know who will be helping me and this way I don't have to worry who it will be as all the staff know I only like these to girls to help me with my bath'.

We spoke with two relatives of people who use the service they told us they are happy with the care and support their parents receive. Some comments made were

'Mum has settled in well it was difficult to begin with but the staff were really good and supportive to mum and me'.

'The managers and the care team leaders always ring me to let me know how mum is and if they have had the GP in to see her'.

The eight people spoken with were asked about the standard of the meals provided at the home. Some comments made were;

'I like the meals especially the new ones on the menu like curries and spaghetti bolognese as I would eat them if I was living at home'.

"The meals are usually very good tasty and hot".

"I've got not complaints about the food".

The eight people spoken with during our visit described the staff as polite and respectful. Our observations showed that staff are respectful towards the people who use the service. Throughout the visit we observed people being treated in a friendly and dignified manner by the staff team.

The eight people we spoke with said they are getting the support they need and want at the service. They said that staff are always available when they are needed. Some comments made were;

'I'd rather live in my own home but the girls are very nice and kind and help me when I need it'.

'I have no complaints about the staff they are very good but always busy I think there should be more of them'.

We spoke with two relatives of people who use the service they told us they are happy with the support and care provided to their relatives. Some comments made were;

'The staff are very kind it's always calm when I come to visit and the staff always offer tea or coffee'.

'I visit at all different times and am in most days the staff are very caring and helpful'.

Halton Contracts and Commissioning team were contacted. They told us they have asked the manager to ensure the staff team receive health and safety training at regular intervals.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who use the service provided us with the following information:

I'm happy here and the staff look after me well'.

'If I was unhappy about anything I would go and see Diane (manager)'.

'The staff are very good, they work very hard'.

'If I had a problem I could go to any of the staff and I know they would help me'.

'The staff are very good I let them know if I'm not happy with anything and they sort it out for me'.

'I look after myself and don't need the staff to do much for me. But there are people here who need the staff to do most things for them. I have seen them having to wait to be helped to go the toilet sometimes it takes the staff so long they wet themselves. It's not that the staff are lazy it just that there aren't enough of them. They are always running around working it's a shame'.

'I don't think there are enough staff sometimes I have to shout for the staff to help my friend when she needs to go to the toilet'.

'We spend a lot of time on our own it would be nice for the staff to sit and have a chat'.

The contract and commissioning team from Halton Borough Council provided the following information:

'We feel the service provides an adequate service to the people who live there'.

Members of the staff team spoken with provided the following information:

'I enjoy working here it is really busy usually have my break in the lounge with the residents'.

'Training is ok I'd like to do more but the cost and the staffing level make it difficult'.
