During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out a visit to the service to check that action had been taken regarding staff recruitment. The provider was required to ensure that a robust recruitment process was put in place and all necessary checks were completed prior to staff starting work. We looked at three new staff records and associated documents. We found that actions had been taken and the manager told us that processes had been developed to ensure that staff were not employed without the appropriate checks.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke nine people who use the service and all the staff who were on duty on the day of our visit. To help us to understand the experiences of people, we spent time observing what was going on in the home. We observed how people spent their time, the support they received from staff and whether they had positive outcomes.

People told us that they were “very well looked after” and staff treated them with respect. Another person told us that the “girls are very good” and they liked living at the home. Three people told us that that their privacy was ‘always’ respected when receiving care. People said that they enjoyed the meals at the home and they were offered choices. Two people told us that staff respected their choice and they were able to choose how they spent their time. A person told us that they "loved " books and visited the library independently and the staff supported them.

We found that care plans and assessments were variable and there was a lack of reviews to ensure that care plans remained current. Infection control procedures were inadequate and did not ensure that people were always protected against the risk of cross infection. Medicines were managed appropriately, however the process for returned medicines were lacking. The recruitment process was inadequate and may put people at risk to their welfare and well being. There was a lack of clear process to show that the provider regularly assessed and monitored the quality of the services provided.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to some people using the service. Some people had cognitive problems which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spoke to some of the residents and three relatives and the staff. To help us to understand the experiences of people, we spent time observing what was going on in the home. We observed how people spent their time, the support they received from staff and whether they had positive outcomes.

We observed interactions between the staff and people who use the service. People told us that they were treated with respect and that the staff were' very kind.' They told us that their privacy was 'always' respected when receiving care. People were offered choices and there was no restriction to time when they got up or went to bed. People commented that the staff helped them and they liked living at the home.

They told us that the food was good and they were offered choices. One person said that they 'ate most things and was not fussy.' People were aware that they could ask for something different but they said they usually did not.

We were told that they were supported to bring in items of personal belongings, which included some furniture. They said it was very nice to be able to do this as it made them feel at home with their belongings around them.

The relatives and two residents said that they would approach the manager and the care staff with any concerns. They were confident these would be addressed. People told us that if they had any problems they could talk to the staff.
