During a routine inspection

Prior to our visit we reviewed all the information we had received from the provider. We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service, because they had complex needs which meant they were limited in the amount they were able to tell us about their experiences.

We spoke with three staff and the registered manager and undertook a brief tour of the service. We observed the support people who used the service received from staff and spoke with three people when the opportunities arose. We also looked at some of the records held in the service including the care files for three people.

People who used the service told us, 'I have discussed my file, I agree with what it says.' And 'In the beginning my wife dealt with everything but now I am able to decide things.'

A person told us their stay at the service had been positive. They said, 'I am going home, everyone here has helped me. They (staff) have supported me to move forward.'

A person told us they went to the gym once a week which they enjoyed. They said they had also started swimming and went when they could.

People said they felt safe in the service. One person told us staff were trained to deal with challenging behaviour, They said, 'They (staff) calm the person down whilst keeping them safe and do not cause any harm to themselves or others.' A person told us they felt at ease to talk to all the staff about anything.

During an inspection in response to concerns

We carried out this responsive inspection because we had concerns that this service had not been visited since 21 April 2009.

There were ten people living at the service when we visited and the feedback we received from two people about their experience of life at the home was positive.

One person told us they were well cared for and felt safe. Another person told us they could take part in a wide range of activities.

One person said they would talk to staff if they had any complaints or comments to make about the service.
