During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited two supported living services and met with eight people who were receiving a service from N.E.W Suffolk. We spoke with four staff, two managers and reviewed four people's care plans.

Due to the complex needs of the people, we visited which included limited or no verbal communication we were unable to gain their views and experiences of the service directly. However, we were able to make general observations of the quality of the service they received. We found that staff demonstrated a good understanding and awareness of people's individual needs. We saw a positive relationship between staff and people who used the service. Staff communicated confidently and competently with people who had more specific communication needs.

We found that people were protected against the risks associated with medicines. There was enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs. However we found that care and treatment was not planned and delivered in a way that protected people's safety and welfare

During a routine inspection

The service is based in three geographical locations in Suffolk with the regional office in Claydon, Suffolk. We spoke with two people who used the service, one relative and six staff. One person who used the service told us, 'The staff are kind and helpful.' Three members of staff told us about the training and supervision in arrangements in place so they could effectively support people using the service. They also told us about how people's needs were assessed and about how people's support plans were written and reviewed. Two people who used the service told us how they were involved with writing their support plans.

We found the service was meeting the health care needs of people using the service. People's support plans and all mandatory training for staff was up to date.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service. They were complimentary about their support workers and the service they received from N.E.W Suffolk. One person told us 'it's a good place; support workers are nice and friendly'.

Everyone we spoke with told us they had regular, reliable and competent support workers that were attentive and understood their needs. One person told us 'I like it here; I don't want to go anywhere else, the people are nice'. We asked them how their support workers assisted them to be independent and one person told us 'I could not go out on the bus myself, now I can as they (support workers) have helped me'.

People we spoke with told us they were fully consulted about their care plans and had been asked for their views about the service they received.
