During a routine inspection

We spoke with the registered manager, medical director, administrative manager, quality manager, two nurses, a member of the theatre team and five couples considering or undergoing treatment. We found that people's privacy, dignity and independence were respected. People's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. One patient described staff as, "friendly" and another said the consultant had been "approachable and reassuring."

We found that people received treatment that was safe and met their individual needs. One patient told us, 'It was clear the doctors and nurses had actually read my notes and I've been pleased with the attention to detail.' We judged that people who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse. Staff were knowledgeable about the signs of abuse, patients were permitted to take another adult of their choice into their scans and the provider ensured chaperones were available.

The provider had effective recruitment procedures in place, meaning that only staff of good character and with the correct professional qualifications were recruited. We also found the provider had an effective complaints procedure in place and used the information received in complaints to minimise risks where appropriate.

During a routine inspection

We were not able to talk to patients as their treatment made it difficult to do so at the time of the visit.

We spoke with six members of staff during our visit. This enabled us to understand the services provided. We were told by staff that they enjoyed working at the unit. One member of staff commented that she 'loved coming to work'. All staff talked with explained that they were involved in decision making and felt that patients were at the centre of their care. They were able to provide detailed documentation to support their view and were able to talk in detail about how they maintained the dignity of patients.

There were systems in place that demonstrated an effective care pathway. Staff were able to explain the pathway in detail and showed a good understanding of their roles that supported the care and welfare of patients.

We reviewed the infection prevention and decontamination policies, which were concise and well presented. They had been reviewed and were up to date. When questioned staff were familiar with the policies and procedures. The unit was clean and staff were clear about their role and responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and high levels of hygiene.
