All Inspections

4 July 2013

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two people who had laser eye surgery at Optical Express - Milton Keynes. They told us that they were very pleased with their results. One person said “It is a good service and I am happy with the aftercare”. We observed another person having an initial consultation and noted that the staff member gave a full description of the risks and benefits and procedure for laser eye surgery.

We saw that the premises and the clinical rooms were clean and that there was a system in place to regularly review the quality of the service. We saw that patient feedback was sought before and up to three months after surgery. We noted that staff had appraisals of their work and that there were arrangements in place for staff support and development.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people to find out their views about the treatment and care they had received at the service. The people told us that were pleased with the results of their laser eye surgery and they had been well looked after by staff. They also told us that they had received a thorough eye and health assessment before their surgery to make sure that they were suitable for a laser eye procedure.

One person told us that the risks and benefits of laser eye surgery had been fully explained to them by the service. They told us that this had enabled them to make an informed decision about whether they wanted to go ahead with the surgery. The person also told us that they had been given detailed written information about the possible complications of laser eye surgery and had been asked to sign the consent form to say that they had understood the information provided. However, two people told us that the written information given to them had not been fully explained to them by a member of staff. One person told us that the staff had focused more on explaining the benefits of having the surgery, rather than the risks relating to laser eye surgery.

During the inspection visit, we found some concerns relating to the safety and suitability of the premises, cleanliness and infection control, supporting workers and assessing and monitoring the level of service provision.

During a routine inspection

No patients were scheduled for surgery on the day of the inspection visit, however we randomly selected six people to speak with who had recently undergone laser eye surgery.

Overall people told us they were very 'happy with the information given' and were supported in making their decision. Some people said the staff had been 'very helpful' and they had 'total confidence in the care received'. One person was not totally satisfied with the information they had been given but said they were in contact with the clinic to resolve the issues.
