During a routine inspection

We spoke with two of the six people who used the service. They both told us staff sought their consent before they delivered any care. They said they were very happy with the level of care provided and staff understood their needs. One person said 'I like it here. People are nice, they look after me'. Another person told us 'they look after me very well'. We looked at four care plans and saw they were individualised and included the necessary information to inform staff as to the specific care people required. We saw these were reviewed and updated every six months. We observed care in the communal areas of the home and saw staff interacting with people in a positive way.

We saw the home was clean and appropriately maintained. The manager showed us the refurbishment schedule for those areas of the home which required updating. We saw there was a current infection control policy and the manager told us they were the infection control lead. We spoke with three members of staff and the manager, all of whom said they had received infection control training. Everyone we spoke with told us the home was always clean. One person said 'everywhere is nice and clean. I help them with my room on Mondays'.

We found there was a duty roster system, which detailed planned cover and the arrangements in place to manage short term absence. We looked at records of care, staff records and records relating to the running of the home. These contained all relevant required information and were stored securely.

We spoke with two families of people who used the service. They told us they did not have any issues regarding the quality of the service provided. One relative said 'I have always found it very welcoming. A home from home, I couldn't fault it'. Another relative told us their relative was 'very, very happy there'. They added 'I feel the staff there are an extension of our family'.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people and a relative, and observed care throughout the home. People told us they felt safe and staff were available when needed. One relative said 'It is a homely type of home, he really likes it there. When he is with me he is always asking when he can go back'. We observed staff providing care and saw that people looked happy and relaxed. We reviewed three care plans and healthcare plans including risk assessments. Each plan was in a consistent format and included information necessary to inform staff as to specific care needs. We saw that reviews of care were conducted regularly and the date of the review was included in their plan.

We spoke with three staff, including the manager and confirmed that they had received appropriate training and had the skills to carry out their duties. Staff had received safeguarding training and were able to say what action they would take if concerns were raised or observed. They told us that there was sufficient staff available to meet people's needs. We saw that there was a quality assurance framework in place that supported the home's approach to service delivery.

We spoke with three care managers and a health professional, who told us they were happy with the care provided at the home. They said that there was good communication and they were kept informed of changes in people's condition. One said 'I think it is really good. It is a joy to see. I really like it there'.
