During an inspection looking at part of the service

Many people living at the home had complex needs and were not able to verbally communicate their views and experiences to us.

We were able to speak with three people during the visit who told us they liked living at College House and that the staff were supportive. People said, "I like it here", "I have lived here for 15 years, I'm happy here" and "The staff are nice".

We asked people if they had enough support and choice in how they spent their time. Comments included: 'I go out a lot round the shops, I like to do that', 'I do want I want, I have my independence' and 'Spend most of the time in my room, I like watching TV.'

People told us that they knew who to speak with if they had any concerns. One person said 'I have no complaints, if I had any problems I would tell them, they sort things out.'

We spoke with one relative during the visit who expressed their satisfaction with the home and said 'The staff let me know if there have been any changes, I am happy with everything'.

During a routine inspection

People who live in the home have a variety of complex needs and some people had difficulty expressing their opinions about the service and whether their care needs were met. However we spoke to a number of people who told us they were happy living in the home and they described how they were able to make choices about their daily routines and how their care is delivered.

Comments included "They always ask you first if you want to get up" and 'You can please yourself, I go out when I want to'.

There were some mixed comments about the activities available to people, comments included 'All we do is watch television' and 'There isn't much to do'. Another person told us that they were happy with their own company and spent time reading books and newspapers.

Throughout our visit we observed positive interaction between the staff and people who use the service. The staff were respectful, kind and polite towards people.

During the visit we spoke with a number of relatives who expressed their satisfaction with the standards of care at the home. They told us that the staff were very good and that they were kept informed of any changes. Some of the comments we received included 'I'm very happy with the care here, she is always clean and tidy when we visit', 'The staff are great' and 'The staff are very good, they keep us informed about everything'.
