During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were 19 people living in the home. We spoke with six people, the manager, assistant manager, four staff, one relative and one visiting health care professional.

People told us they were very happy with the service they received at the home. One person told us, 'I have no regrets moving here, I'm quite happy' and another said 'Very, very pleased with it.' People told us they were always consulted about their care and were asked for their consent to the care they were given.

Care plans provided staff with enough information to ensure people's needs were met. We saw that people's needs and abilities had been assessed and care and support was planned to ensure people remained as independent as possible. People were satisfied that their health care needs were met.

We saw that people could choose to join in group activities in the lounge or spend time on their own interests.

People were satisfied that they lived in a clean environment.

Systems were in place to ensure only appropriate people were employed to work at the home. Staff were knowledgeable about people's needs and able to support people in the way they wanted.

There were systems in place to ensure people's views were listened to and acted on.

During a routine inspection

On our visit to the home in July 2011, we had some minor concerns about how the provider maintained compliance with the essential standards of safeguarding people who use services and for maintaining the safety and suitability of the premises. The provider sent us a report explaining the actions they would take to become compliant. During this visit we found that the provider had taken actions and that the actions were effective to meet the essential standards.

We spoke with two people who lived at the home and three relatives about the quality of care. They all said they were more than happy with the care and support they received. One person said, 'There is a homely social cohesion here ' a shared purpose." Another person told us, 'It is a small community and we all know and understand each other from our previous lives'. A relative said, 'X is more content, confident and happy since she moved here. This has enabled her to maintain her independence."

We spoke with three staff and looked at the care plans for four people who lived at the home. We saw that people's abilities had been assessed and care and support was planned to promote people's independence and encourage involvement in the community.

We saw that people could choose to join in group activities in the lounge or spend time on their own interests. Staff ate lunch with people who lived at the home and chatted about their day. We saw that people's relatives were welcome to join them for lunch.

We observed there was a pleasant calm atmosphere in the home. People told us they received the care and support they needed from kind and caring staff. Comments included: 'We all care for each other'. 'As Christadelphians we have different types of homes, this is one where we can prepare our own breakfast and tea'. 'Someone comes in and helps me if needed, if I need a bath or shower they help'.

People told us they enjoyed the food, that there was a good variety and there was always a choice of a main course.

We found there was a good range of social activities being provided. This included board games, outside visits, exercise classes, Bible readings and recreational activities including potting plants.

We saw that people had portable call bells to alert staff if they needed assistance. People said that if they felt concerned about anything they felt comfortable to raise their concerns with the manager.

People spoken to told us there was nothing they would change about the home. They said they were happy with the quality of care and support they were receiving. Comments included: 'Lovely staff'. They (staff) are very good and usually very helpful. If they don't know what to do they find someone who does'. 'The staff are super, very kind and very caring I can't fault them'.
