During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with thirteen people using the service, one health care professional, and seven members of staff including three members of the senior management team.

We saw staff treated people with respect and dignity. People told us that choices had been offered and their views had been taken into consideration. One person said, "I go out for short walks. I go out with my family at weekends for shopping. I go to the library to change my books because I read a lot'.

We saw staff speaking with people in a respectful and responding to people's body language and offering support people seem at ease with staff. When we asked people about staff attitude towards living in the home in general, they replied 'staff are very kind and patient'.

People's needs had been assessed by the deputy manager and a range of health professionals including doctors and community nurses. People said they were involved with developing their care and support plans. This meant that people's healthcare needs had been monitored and met.

We saw the provider had a policy on safeguarding people from abuse. Staff had attended training to ensure people who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse.

We saw the provider had an effective system in place to regularly monitor the quality of the service that people received.

We saw there were sufficient numbers of suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff in the home at all times.

During a routine inspection

The people that spoke to us were positive about how they are supported by the staff.

People felt that they live in a home as near as it can be to being their own home. Examples of comments people made included, 'the owner has very well trained staff, I think it's lovely here, I can't think of anything to improve it here', 'I think it is a very nice place, you can talk to anyone at anytime. The staff are very, very kind', 'I feel very safe here' and 'the staff are doing a very good job'.

We found that staff were approachable and people felt confident and relaxed about making their views known to them and to the owner.

People were being supported by staff to meet their needs. We saw people have their needs met in a timely and effective way.

Care plans properly support and guide staff and this ensures that people receive the right care to meet their needs.

People feel safe from abuse in the home, and the staff have done training on the subject of abuse. Staff have a safeguarding procedure to follow in the event of an allegation of abuse. The procedure needs updating to reflect current guidance about reporting allegations of abuse.

The majority of staff were being supervised in the work they do. The current staff supervison system needs to be reviewed, so that all staff who support people with their needs are being supervised in their work.

There were effective methods being used to seek people's views about the quality of service and care they get.
