Independence, choice and control
People told us they were able to do the things they wanted to do, both at the home and in the community. One person spoke enthusiastically about their role as health and safety representative. They told us about how they assisted with safety checks around the home. They said, "I really like doing this. I'm always checking if everyone is safe and I tell the staff if I spot a problem."
The manager and staff spoke about the importance of ensuring people were as independent as they could be in accordance with their wishes and preferences. They described how they supported people to develop skills in, for example, self care, food preparation and laundry. A staff member told us that people were encouraged to take mobile phones with them where they went out independently. They said, "We ony contact them if they are late coming back so they don't think we are checking up on them all the time. They know to call us if they have a problem."
People's care plans included information about their skills and abilities, with guidance for staff, where appropriate, on how they should support them to maintain and develop these. An activity board in the home's office, along with care records, showed people received support to undertake activities such as cleaning, laundry and cooking.
