Date of assessment 4 December 2024 to 3 January 2025. Wisteria House (Woolwell) Dementia Care Ltd is a residential service providing support to 29 older people living with dementia. There was a proactive and positive culture of safety. The provider worked with people and healthcare partners to understand what being safe meant to them and the best way to achieve that. People’s healthcare risks were assessed and regularly reviewed.
There was a large management team and staff dedicated to spending quality time with people working seven days a week. The ethos of the service focused on relationship care and quality of life, which focused on providing opportunities for fun and activity, reducing people’s stress and anxiety.
There was a variety of social spaces designed to meet people’s individual needs, with a large range of items available to encourage social stimulation. People had access to food and drink through the day and night and were encouraged to maintain skills preparing food and drink in the communal kitchen areas.
The provider was exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity. The ethos of providing quality of life through relationship dementia care put kindness, compassion and dignity at the centre of staff practice. Staff responded well to people’s individual needs and felt proud to work at the service. One staff member said, “I am proud to be working in a friendly, modern care home with such a good reputation in the city.”
The provider had a very clear shared vision, strategy and culture. Leaders understood the context in which they delivered care, treatment and support and embodied the culture and values of their workforce and organisation, supporting staff well. One staff member said, “I have worked in a few care homes and this is by far the best. The whole approach and feel of the place is how a home should be.”
