During a routine inspection

In this report the name of a registered manager Christine Faulkner appears who was not in post and not managing the regulatory activities at this location at the time of the inspection. Their name appears because they were still one of the two Registered Managers on our register at the time.

Patients told us they were happy with the care and support they received. Patients said they found nursing staff and volunteers to be attentive and responsive to their needs. Patients comments included: - 'I've been coming here for two years; they can't do enough for you. It's my social event of the week, meeting and talking with people. It's also the fellowship of being with people who understand what you're going through.' 'Me and my wife have used the complementary therapies, both having had head and back massages.' 'I've joined in the quizzes and the bingo. We also have remembrance services for those people who are no longer with us.'

We spoke with the provider and others with specific responsibilities within the service. People we spoke with were able to tell us about the day to day running of the service and how they involved patients and their relatives in reviewing the service they provided. We looked at a range of records, which included patient records, staff recruitment, audits for the prevention of infection and the maintenance of the service. All recording systems were up to date and effectively used to monitor the service.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with patients and asked them about their involvement in their

care and treatment and for their views about the care and support they received. We

received positive comments from patients who told us that the staff and volunteers provided a safe environment where patients in a similar position to themselves could speak openly and honestly about their health and how it affected them, without fear of judgement. Patients told us they were involved in decisions about their care and that their named nurse regularly reviewed their needs with them. Patients comments included:-

'They explain what the doctors have told you, gently and kindly using words not to upset you but to help you understand. They show you kindness and compassion but not pity.'

'It's just so helpful here it's incredible. What's helped me is being able to talk to people in the same position as me.'

'They've brought out the artistic side of me I didn't know I had, I particular enjoy painting.'

'I live on my own, to see people once a week and get out is fantastic, there are no airs and graces, you walk in, everyone is equal and the staff are fantastic.'
