During an inspection looking at part of the service

During our inspection of Park House Nursing Care Centre on 30 November 2012, we found that the provider was not compliant with the regulations relating to medicine management. We found that medicines were not managed well enough to ensure people received their medicines safely and as they were prescribed. The provider sent us an action plan stating that they would be compliant by 5 January 2013.

During this inspection on 25 February 2013 we noted that a number of improvements had been made to the way medicines were being managed. The provider's policy on medicine management had been updated, and staff instructed to follow it. Staff had signed the records to show that they had given each medicine, or had used the relevant code to explain why the medicine had not been given and numbers of tablets in stock tallied with the records. This meant that people were being given their medicines safely and as they were prescribed.

30 November 2012

During a routine inspection

During our inspection of Park House Nursing Care Centre on 30 November 2012 people told us they liked living there and that they were satisfied with the care. One person said, 'This is a very warm, comfortable home.' A family member told us, 'I'd certainly recommend the home to other people, and I'd be happy to come here if I needed to.'

We saw that staff treated people with respect and that people's privacy and dignity were maintained. People said that they could make choices in all areas of their lives, that there was plenty of activity going on if they wanted to join in, and that they were given opportunities to put their views about the running of the home forward to the management team.

Care records showed that staff were given guidance on people's needs and how people preferred those needs to be met. Risks were assessed and minimised and people saw other healthcare professionals to ensure their health was maintained as far as possible.

The provider had an effective recruitment procedure in place so that only staff suitable to work with vulnerable people were employed. Staff received training and support to ensure they could do their job as well as possible. Everyone we spoke with knew how to complain, and to whom, should they have needed to.

However, medicines were not managed well enough to ensure people received their medicines safely and as they were prescribed.

9 December 2011

During a routine inspection

We visited Park House Nursing Care Centre on 09 and 21 December 2011. When we visited on 09 December 2011 all the people living at the home had been asked to remain in their bedrooms for the day as a preventive measure to make sure a possible sickness bug did not spread. We spoke with a number of people, and spoke to more people when we returned on 21 December 2011. In this report we have combined the evidence from both days.

People we spoke with, and relatives and friends that we met, were very satisfied with the care that was provided and effusive in their praise for the home and the staff team. One person said, 'There's a warmth and vibrancy in this building which can only be caused by the people who live and work here'. Another told us 'I'm very happy here ' it has a very warm feeling'. Visitors we spoke with made comments including 'This place is getting better and better ' everything is going in the right direction', and 'I would definitely recommend the home ' my relative's getting the best possible care'.
