Some of the people who used this service had limited verbal communication and therefore were not able to tell us directly about their experiences of the service. We spoke with four people who used the service, and observed staff supporting people with their daily activities.

Plans of care included all aspects of people’s health, social and personal care needs. One person commented, “When s/he was in hospital two care assistants from Frognal Farmhouse took it in turns to stay with her/him- this was an excellent decision and I appreciate it very much”. People were able to take part in activities at home and in the community. People had the opportunity to go on holiday. One person told us, “I went up in a plane. Did some dancing and saw a show”.

Medicines were given to people safely and as intended by their GP. Effective systems were in place to ensure people were protected from harm and that the staff who were recruited were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

The home was clean and improvements had been made to the laundry room to minimise the risk of any infection.

People were positive about the support provided by the staff team. “Frognal Farm seems to me to be a place where kindness and not ‘so common or garden’ humanity are the norm”, one relative commented. A health professional commented, "I cannot praise you all highly enough for your love and care you showed him/her over the past months".

Care plans were being developed so that they gave clear guidance to staff and were written from the point of view of the person who was receiving care.

People were supported to take part in daily living skills and access the local community.

People and visitors to the home told us that they were satisfied with the support that they or their relative received. One person told us, 'The cook and staff have done a good job since I have been here'. Another person said, 'The home has kindness, care, compassion and attention to detail'.I cannot emphasise, enough, the kindness of the staff at this home'.

The home had assessed the quality of service that it provided and had put a plan of action in place to address the areas of the service where shortfalls had been identified.

Plans were in place to refurbish parts of the home that had not been adequately maintained and that did not present a dignified environment to the people who lived at the home. This included the laundry room, an upstairs bathroom and decoration in communal areas of the home.

Not all of the people we spoke with were able to respond verbally, some used signing to make themselves understood. We spoke with five of the people who used this service. They all said or signed that they were very happy living in the home, that they had things they liked to do and that they liked the staff.

People told us that they could choose what to do and were supported by the staff to gain more independence. One person told of their aim to become more independent and said that they had already made progress. They said they were working with staff to get better at cooking and making drinks for themselves. Another person told us how they made sure that they put their personal laundry away tidily.

People told us they had plenty of parties in the home to celebrate birthdays and special occasions such as Divali, Ede and Christmas. One person was pleased to tell us about the celebration they had for Divali the day before our visit.

The people who used this service said that they had been able to personalise their rooms and that they had the things they liked around them. One person showed us their room and said that they had been able to choose the colour scheme and soft furnishings.
