All Inspections

20 November 2013

During a routine inspection

People were supported in promoting their independence and community involvement. One person told us that they managed their own medicines and they had somewhere safe to keep medicines in their room. We observed one person asking staff whether they could accompany them shopping. Staff responded positively and arranged a time for a shopping trip that afternoon.

We found support plans and risk assessments in place for two people who had been using the service for a period of time. However, staff told us that they needed more information to support new people joining the service right from the start of their admission.

We found evidence challenging behaviour was not adequately managed and that, at times, this had a negative impact on people using the service.

We found evidence that procedures for the safe handling of medicines, including administration, recording and monitoring were not being followed in practice.

All of the staff we spoke with told us they had regular supervision that was helpful. A staff member told us that supervision helped them to identify ways to improve their performance and the quality of care they provided. Other staff told us that they received praise for their work, and that they could work as a team with other staff members. This meant that staff were being properly supported to provide care and treatment to people who use services.

During a routine inspection

We saw recorded evidence that people were able to be involved in routine reviews of their care plans. We spoke to five people who were using the service. The people we spoke with told us that they were involved in reviews of their care plans and were happy with their level of involvement. One person told us 'We usually sit down every month or so and talk about what's working well and what's not working so well, I am happy here.' This meant that people expressed their views and were involved in making decisions about their care.

We saw a program of scheduled activities for the week of our visit. This included activities such as arts and crafts and bingo. People told us they enjoyed taking part in various activities in the home and that were able to take part in activities suited to their interests.

The people we spoke with told us they felt safe living at the service. People also knew who they could talk to should they have any concerns.
