During a routine inspection

We spoke with two of the 12 people living at the service with their permission; we also spoke with three staff and the manager to help us make a decision about whether the location was compliant.

We found people were treated respectfully, involved in planning their care and that their independence was encouraged. One person said, "The staff are nice to me and I get on well with them."

People received care, support and where necessary treatment to ensure their health and welfare. The planning and delivery of care met their individual needs. One person said, "I get the support I need from staff, I am very happy with it."

We found people were protected from risks to their health and welfare when they needed support from more than one agency as the staff worked in co-operation with others and made sure other agencies understood their needs and the challenges they faced. One person said, "The staff talk to my consultant and my community nurses to make sure I am well. They also come to my care programme approach meetings to support me and make sure I can tell people what I think and what I want."

The arrangements for medicines were safe. One person told us they managed their own medicines; the other person said, "The staff make sure I get my tablets on time and they bring me a drink. They always check I have taken them. I have some tablets for my physical and mental health. They suit me, I'm happy with them."

During a routine inspection

All of the people we spoke with told us that they made their own decisions about their lives, sometimes with support or guidance from staff but they said that the staff respected any decisions they made. One person told us, "I make my own decisions the staff respect them, I can do what I like."

People told us they received the support they needed. We saw support plans were very detailed and contained a lot of information about people's needs, wishes and preferences. The staff told us they felt the support plans were 'excellent,' and they said they had the information required to provide the support people needed.

We found that the staff were supportive to people when untoward incidents happened and took action in consultation with the person to make them feel safe and protected. The management and staff took immediate action to protect a person who raised some concerns. This meant the staff and manager responded appropriately to allegations of abuse.

All of the people we spoke with praised the staff and said they were kind. 'The staff are nice; I get on well with all of them they understand me and help me.' The staff said they received excellent training and helpful supervision to make sure their work was of a high standard.

There was an effective complaints procedure in place and concerns were responded to and resolved.
