During a routine inspection

We spoke with two of the three people who lived at the home during our visit. We were told, "I love living here" and "I don't want to live anywhere else." We also spoke with the manager and a member of staff working as a house leader.

We observed the member of staff supporting people with their daily routines and saw that people were treated with dignity and respect. We saw that the home's rota was arranged so that people had opportunities to go out and do things they enjoyed with one to one support from a member of staff.

We looked at records which described how people liked and needed to be cared for and supported. We saw that records had been reviewed to make sure they accurately reflected people's needs and preferences. The member of staff we spoke with demonstrated an understanding of people's needs and clearly knew them well.

We found the complaints procedure was made available to people in a format that was accessible to them so that concerns or complaints could be addressed. People told us, "There is nothing to complain about."

People told us they were encouraged and assisted to maintain and develop their independence. We saw that people had been supported to do this by managing their own medicines, retaining a key to their home and cooking for themselves. One person commented, "I like to do things for myself and we take it in turns here. I have learned a lot of things."

During a routine inspection

On the day of the visit on 25 August 2011, we spoke with all four people living in the home and staff. Until recently two rooms in the house were used by people who came in for short stays on a respite basis, there were therefore two empty rooms on the day of the visit. There were no visitors in the home on the day of the visit.

We observed how staff offered people care and how staff spoke with them. We looked at

how staff treated them to ensure that they were treated with dignity, were able to stay as

independent as possible and if they were offered privacy. We found that staff treated

people kindly and respectfully and demonstrated that they knew them as individuals and understood their individual needs.

People living in the home, who were able to do so, told us that they were happy with the care they received. They told us 'it's nice here' and 'it's perfect'

We asked them about the staff and how they were with them. They said 'staff are friendly' and 'staff treat me well.'

We looked at the kinds of activities and events that happened in the service and asked people about how they spent their day. They said 'I like doing things for myself. ' We saw that people took part in day to day activities, they assisted with cleaning, and tidying, laundry, cooking, shopping and washing up. They also enjoyed going to day centres to college and also told us about their holidays and going to the garden centre and to the theatre.

People told us they liked the food provided and that they were happy with their rooms and the level of cleanliness in the home.
