We checked that people who use this service

  • Where they are able, give valid consent to the examination, care, treatment and support they receive.
  • Understand and know how to change any decisions about examination, care, treatment and support that has been previously agreed.
  • Can be confident that their human rights are respected and taken into account.

How this check was done

We reviewed information sent to us by other organisations, carried out a visit on 16 January 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service, talked with staff, reviewed information sent to us by commissioners of services and reviewed information sent to us by local groups of people in the community or voluntary sector.

Our judgement

Systems were not in place to demonstrate that people were regularly asked for their consent to care and support and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

Reasons for our judgement

People we spoke with told us that they were able to change the way their care was delivered. They told us that staff would do things differently if they asked them to.

We saw that some of the care planning documents in use gave the opportunity for people to sign that they had given consent to their planned care and support. Not all of the documents that we looked at had been signed by people who use the service.

There were no policies or procedures in place in relation to consent to care and support. The lack of guidance to people who live at Westleigh and the staff team could result in people not being aware that they were able to change decisions made about their care and support.
