Our view of the service
Newnton House Residential Care Home is a 'care home'. Newnton House Residential Care Home provides care and support for up to nine people with mental health needs. The service aims to provide a short-term service for people before they are able to live more independently. At the time of our inspection there were nine men living at the home but only one person receiving support with a regulated activity.
During the inspection we reviewed the key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led and all of the quality statements within the key questions. The inspection took place between 1 May and 27 May 2025. We spoke with the registered manager, deputy manager, 2 staff and sought feedback from a health professional. We spoke with 1 person and 1 relative for their views of the home. We viewed 2 care plans and associated risk assessments. We also viewed 4 recruitment files including supervision and training records. We also reviewed documents relating to quality assurance of the home.
People were safe and the home managed people’s risk well. They supported people to become independent through continuous support and positive risk. The risk of infection was minimised and the home environment was clean. However, the recording of some repairs was not always clear and this was raised directly with the registered manager.
Staff were recruited to the home safely and received ongoing support through supervision, appraisal and reflective practice. The registered manager and deputy provided a supportive environment for people and staff and staff confirmed they were able to approach the management team at any time.
Care plans were person-centred and focused on achieving people’s goals and supporting them to be independent as much as possible. Health records were updated regularly and information shared promptly with people’s health professionals and action taken were the home needed to follow up and make health appointments.
People were treated with respect and dignity and were supported to try and integrate in the community safely.
The quality of the home was monitored and staff and people were asked to provide feedback on how the service could be improved.
The registered manager was committed to continuously improving the home for people who lived there and worked with the provider and different health professionals and mental health specialists.
People's experience of this service
People felt safe living at the service and their relatives reported their family member was safe.
Risks were managed well within the home and equipment was maintained safely. People’s health professionals were involved to ensure risk was monitored and appropriate support available when needed.
People were supported to receive their medicines safely. Staff maintained a clean environment and relatives confirmed the home was clean and their family members were well presented when they visited. People had access to a variety of meals and suitable hydration, all while ensuring they made healthy meal choices.
People care was designed for them and reviewed with their individual key worker to check their needs were met and preferences being respected.
Relatives were pleased with the quality of the service and the communication provided from the registered manager and staff at the home. Relatives told us they were happy feedback was listened to which meant improvements were made in the home.
