Caring

Requires improvement

1 May 2025

People were treated with compassion and kindness. Relatives and people told us staff were kind and caring and treated people with dignity. There was a significant lack of activities for people to help stimulate and maintain their wellbeing. People told us they wanted to do more activities they would find interesting. The lack of meaningful activities meant that the service was in breach of Regulation 9 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

This service scored 62 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

Relatives consistently said they felt staff were compassionate and kind. A person said, “The people [staff] here are very friendly and kind to us all, just nice people!” Relatives said, “Mum is treated with dignity and respect. no concerns at all” and “Quite small home with a homely feel and the staff are caring.”

The registered manager and manager both said they felt the staff cared well for people and knew people well. A staff member said, “I love the residents and have formed good relationships.” The registered manager confirmed people were not involved in care planning and this was completed according to their initial assessment of needs and on-going assessments.

The local authority told us they felt the home was a very family-oriented home and people overall received good care. They had observed during quality visits that care staff were kind and treated people with dignity.

Throughout the inspection we observed staff being kind and caring in their interactions with people. Staff treated people with dignity and respect and asked their consent before carrying out any care tasks.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 1

People and relatives told us they were concerned about the lack of activities in the home. We asked people what activities were happening and a person said, “Very little, not much” and “It's good that visitors can visit me whenever they like though, that helps. A few trips would be good.” A relative said, “What worries me is I've not noticed any social outing arranged for them here. I take [person] out, but they do not.” A relative commented, “I’ve always been happy with [person’s] care from day one. I always visit unannounced and there’s never been any issues.”

The registered manager told us they recognised there was a lack of stimulation for people. They said this was something they were looking at and recognised this had been an issue. They confirmed there was a singer who attend the home regularly but that there were no other formalised activities offered. Staff told us they were felt they were too busy with other care tasks to ensure activities were provided and also confirmed they did not usually take people out of the home for trips or walks.

We observed relatives and friends visiting throughout the day. Visitors were greeted warmly by staff. People had access to daily newspapers of their choice which we saw people reading with their breakfast. We observed there were no activities organised, we saw people being given jigsaws in the afternoon and two people did engage with this. The television on the communal area was on at a low volume and not being watched. People were sitting in the living room for long periods of time without any interaction or stimulation. We walked around the home and saw people who were cared for in their rooms often went for long periods of time without staff interaction.

There were no formalised activity plans in place aside from a singer who visited regularly.
