Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care and wellbeing.

Improvements had been made since the last inspection. People were supported to have choice and control over their own care and to make decisions. People had a weekly schedule of activities which outlined how they wanted to spend their time according to their preferences. We met with 1 person who had just returned from a choir session; they were in good spirits and talked about the music they had sung along to. Some people were able to go out independently, but others were reliant on staff or their families if they wanted to go out. A minibus kept outside the home was not utilised as we were told no staff were either qualified or confident to drive it.

Staff supported people to make choices. At lunchtime, people were asked what they would like to eat. One person told us they had chosen to lose weight and staff had been supporting them to choose healthy foods.

There were no restrictions on visiting. People received their family or friends or some would go home on occasion to spend time with their families.
