Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

The provider did not always promote people’s independence, so people did not always know their rights and have choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

The registered manager had not take appropriate actions to ensure people were cared for in line with the mental capacity act. Records relating to mental capacity and best interest decisions were not in place.

People gave positive feedback about how staff promoted choice in day to day tasks. When asked about promoting independence, a relative said, “When [staff] come, they’ll ask [person] what wash they want or if they want to stay in bed. They have their routine and go ahead with what they want. They say, ‘it’s your decision’ [to the person].”

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Daily care records showed staff reacted to people’s immediate needs quickly and appropriately, for example, organising medical appointments for them.
