During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods, for example observing how people were supported to make decisions about their care, to help us understand the experiences of people using the service. This was because some people were unable to give us their comments directly about the care they received.

During our visit we found people were asked for their consent before they received any care or treatment and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes.

We found care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way which ensured peoples' safety and welfare. We spoke with people about how they felt about the home. They said things like 'I'm fine,' 'The lasses are very good,' and 'It's wonderful, I'm so much better since I've been here.' One person told us the home was 'very good no complaints.'

The provider had made suitable arrangements to protect vulnerable people and responded appropriately to any allegation of abuse.

The provider had taken steps to make sure people at the home were protected from staff who were unsuitable to work with vulnerable people. This was because they had carried out thorough background checks.

We found the provider had an effective system in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people using the service and promote their health and wellbeing.

We found people who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on. In feedback from a survey the provider had carried out with relatives they told us all staff were 'excellent' at communicating with them and they 'couldn't agree more strongly that staff are excellent.' Other comments included 'It's a warm feeling as you enter the building' and 'Staff have a good sense of humour which I think is important.'

One person told us, 'You can't fault the help and support you get from these (staff), they really do take very good care of you ' exceptionally good.'

We found care and treatment at the home was planned and delivered in a way which ensured people's safety and welfare. People at the home said they felt involved in decisions about their care and wellbeing.

One person's relative told us, 'They always involve the nurses or doctors if they're worried about anyone.'

We found the home had been checked to make sure people were protected against the risk and spread of infection.

We found staff received appropriate professional development. People told us they were happy with the support they received from staff. One person told us, 'They are kind and courteous and they have helped my (relative) and the whole family through our ups and downs over the last year. I have a great deal of confidence.. in them.'

We found people who used the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about the care and treatment offered. Their responses were acknowledged and acted on. 'They are very kind',

'The food is good and there is plenty of it'

'I've got no complaints'

'I get communion here on a Monday night'

'It's not a bad place but it's not your own home'

'I might ask for sandwiches later as I've already had a hot meal and we get another one at tea-time. I don't fancy it today, but that will be alright with them' and

'There is not much to do here'.

One relative also told us that:

'I'm very pleased with it here',

'There are regular hot meals',

'They bathe her nicely and put her makeup on',

'They do a good job' and

'I can talk to Pam (the deputy manager) whenever I like'.

The deputy manager told us 'The paperwork isn't in place, we know this and we are working on it. We've got problems, they've been identified and we are working to get it right'.
