During an assessment under our new approach
Date of Assessment: 4 August – 10 September 2025. Maryland is a care home without nursing and provides accommodation and personal care for up to 30 people. At the time of the assessment 23 people were living at the home.
This was the first scheduled inspection of the service since its initial registration. We carried out site visits on 4, 5 and 7 August 2025, with the remainder of the assessment being conducted offsite. We assessed 33 quality statements from the key questions safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
During this assessment the provider was in breach of regulations in relation to people’s safety and treatment and good governance. The overall rating is requires improvement.
People were not always provided with safe care and treatment. Risks to people were not consistently identified and monitored. People’s care plans were not always completed and some lacked important information about people’s health care and support needs.
Important health and safety checks, including fire safety checks, had not been carried out, meaning people were at risk from factors within the environment. Safety events were not always analysed, meaning action taken to prevent further occurrences could be missed. There were gaps in risk management and monitoring records. We could not be assured people had received the care they needed at the right time to mitigate risk.
Medicines were not managed or administered safely. We could not be assured people received their prescribed medicines at the right time and in the right way as records were incomplete and lacked important information.
There was a lack of meaningful activities for people impacting on their well-being. However, people’s relatives were able to visit without restriction.
The provider’s governance systems and processes did not operate effectively. As many audits were incomplete, systems and processes failed to assess, monitor, and improve the quality and safety of the service.
However, we received positive feedback about the registered manager, they were described as being ‘visible’, ‘hands on’, ‘caring’ and ‘approachable.’
The registered manager was receptive to our feedback and began taking action to remedy the shortfalls we identified.
