During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit there were six people residing in the home. We were met by the manager and deputy manager who were also the owners.

We found that people were being asked for their consent before being offered care and their right to refuse care was being respected. One person said staff were always asking their permission before offering them support and would never force anything upon them.

We found that people were happy with the level of care being offered to them. One person said 'It's good 'I've got a laptop and printer so I can do my own typing'. A relative said 'it's home from home' for their family member. We also found that people's needs were being properly assessed, managed and reviewed.

We found that people were being safeguarded from abuse and that staff knew how to respond to any incidents of abuse. The people we spoke with said they felt safe from harm.

We found that there were sufficient numbers of qualified staff to provide cover at all times. The people we spoke with and their relatives said they thought the service was properly staffed.

We found that the provider was taking to steps to monitor and assess the quality of the service and to obtain feedback from key stakeholders. One of the people we spoke with said that staff were always asking their views on the service at the service user meetings: ' They ask us how we like it here, what activities we like and so on'.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we met with four of the people who lived at this home. We spoke with one person who described a variety of activities that they were involved in. They talked about how they work in the local community and that they are currently attending computer skills training. We were invited to see this persons room they said 'I choose my furnishings and I come up here to use my laptop'. They also said 'I like living here my family visits me here and I go and stay with them, the staff are really nice and I am happy here'.

Relatives commented on the care provided. One person said 'The care is excellent, I can sleep at night knowing (relative) is safe and cared for'. Another relative said ' (Relative) is happy and well cared for that is obvious. We are extremely happy and consider ourselves very lucky that .. lives here'.

We observed how people were cared for and the amount of support given related to the individual need of each person. People could choose how they spent their time and were involved in their meal choices. There was evidence that people had a recently reviewed care plan, a health passport and regular health check ups.

Staff we spoke to said they get regular supervision training and appraisals. Staff had received training on how to protect people living there from abuse.

Systems to audit the safety and quality of care in this home were in place and had been recently been monitored.
