During a routine inspection

During our visit we were able to speak with two people who used this service. We were able to communicate with one other via non-verbal means. We saw that people were treated with respect and dignity. We saw that staff interaction with people was appropriate and professional.

We looked at care plans of three people and saw that the provider had used information from associated professionals such as social workers and that people and their representatives had been asked their opinion. People who used this service had good contact with appropriate professional and the provider operated an effective referral system.

People told us that they felt safe using the service. Staff training records confirmed that staff had all completed training in safeguarding and knew how to escalate any concern.

Staff had completed a robust induction programme and selection process. This ensured that the home was effectively staffed by appropriately trained people.

Records that we read showed us that the provider was continually striving to review and improve the service.

During a routine inspection

When we visited there were three people living in the home with limited communication skills. The manager told us that where people lacked capacity to consent they acted in accordance with legal requirements. We saw that 'best interest' meetings had been held where decisions about care and treatment were made.

We found that support plans were person centred and contained information about care needs, family and cultural background, weekly activity plans and communication skills.

Everyone at the home attended art therapy and an aromatherapist attended the home every week. One person told us they like living at the home because they like the foot massage.

The manager told us the menu was planned every four weeks and was based on what they knew people liked.

The manager and staff were able to give a clear description of what was meant by terms such as 'safeguarding' and 'abuse.' They told us what action they would take if they suspected abuse and this was in line with what was in their safeguarding policy.

The provider carried out relevant checks when they employed staff. We saw staff were offered employment subject to satisfactory references and criminal records checks.

We saw that records were accurate and up to date and were held securely in locked filing cabinets and only designated staff had access to the keys.

During a routine inspection

People living at 1B The Vale either have limited verbal communication or communicate non-verbally. We sought the views of people through speaking to them and through observations. We also read people's care plans, which told us of the choices that they like to make about their daily lives.

We observed that people interacted well with staff. We noted that people responded very positively when a member of staff arrived for the afternoon shift. When we arrived one person was out in the community with staff, taking part in a regular activity that is very important to the individual. Another person went out in the afternoon with staff; this was also a documented part of their daily life.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Some of the people living at 1b Vale Road found it difficult to tell us about their experiences due to their learning disability. We observed that staff addressed people in a friendly and polite manner, demonstrating an understanding of individual personalities and preferences. There was a proactive approach to respecting people's privacy and the importance of their personal space.
