During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with two people who live at the home; and the relatives of two people who live in the home. We were unable to speak with most people who live in the home due to their complex communication needs

People told us that they understood the care choices available to them, and could have their views taken into account in the way their care was delivered. A person told us, "They are very good at asking me about things. They always ask.'

We found that people's needs were assessed, and care was planned and delivered to meet people's needs. A person told us, "They often ask about your care; and whether you're happy with it." A person's relative told us, "She's in better shape physically than she was when she came here."

We found that people had their medicines at the times they needed them, and in a safe way. The home was administering medications by using the electronic wireless proactive care system (PCS). This was a handheld PCS device that used barcode-scanning technology.

We found that people were supported by staff that were appropriately qualified and physically and mentally able to do their job.

People's comments and complaints were listened to and acted on effectively. People could be sure that they would not be discriminated against for making a complaint. A person told us, "I do complain; a bit too often sometimes. They do listen. If they can do anything about it, they do.'

During a routine inspection

We saw evidence in individual care plans and notes of group meetings that the provider was respecting and involving people. We observed people being treated with respect and their views being sought. People told us "I like it here" and "the staff are really nice".

We were told by one person that "we do lots of lovely things" and we saw the provider made a variety of activities available for people. We found the provider was providing personalised care, treatment and support and that peoples individual needs were assessed with appropriate plans being drawn up and implemented.

There was guidance in the home on safeguarding people from abuse. Staff members spoken to knew how to report any concerns regarding abuse. Staff members told us that they felt it was important that the home had a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We found the provider was protecting people from the risk of abuse.

We found by looking at staff rotas and training records and speaking with the provider that there was sufficient qualified, skilled and experienced staff to provide care and support for people. We were told by one staff member that "the teamwork is amazing".

There was an improvement plan in place and we saw the provider was seeking the views of family representatives and making changes as a result. We found the provider was investigating comments and complaints and accidents and incidents and was learning from these in order to improve the care, treatment and support provided to people.

People told us they are able to participate in activities if they want to. They told us that staff listen and act on their concerns. They also told us they are able to see the GP when they are unwell and that staff treat them with respect.

People told us they like the home and they like having their own personal items with them.

People told us they know how to complain if they are unhappy with the service.
