The provider had systems to ensure that people who used the service received person-centered care and treatment, which was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences.

Preventive oral health care was encouraged.

The practice offered dental implants. We were unable to verify that this treatment was carried out effectively due to information and clinicians not being available on the day of our visit.

The practice carried out dental treatment under intravenous (IV) sedation. The provider did not assure themselves this was done safely. Following discussion, the provider formally advised us that the practice has ceased all sedation services indefinitely.

There were inconsistencies in the information recorded within the dental care records we looked at.

The practice had systems for prescribing medicines in line with current guidance. Improvement was needed to ensure an adequate stock control system for prescriptions was in place.

Staff obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and most understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005Staff described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly.

There were inconsistencies in justification, grading and reporting information on the radiographs we looked at.

Patients were referred to primary and secondary care specialists for treatment the practice did not provide. This included referring patients with suspected cancer under the national faster diagnosis pathways.

Staff felt the practice supported them to develop and enabled them to take on responsibilities.
