All Inspections

9 December 2013

During a routine inspection

We looked round the home and met all the people living there. We observed how staff supported people and spoke with a relative of one person, who told us 'My mother is well cared for.'

We spoke with the manager, three of the care staff and the nurse on duty, the activities coordinator and a visiting trainer, who told us 'It's a nice home because the staff are nice.' One member of staff said 'all the staff are very friendly'. We observed that staff members treated people with kindness and respect.

We reviewed care records for three people who used the service. We found that people who lived at the home experienced safe and effective care because their needs were assessed and reviewed.

People could choose from a varied menu and had the support they needed to help them eat and drink.

People were protected from the risks of unsafe use and management of medication because there were effective systems and processes in place.

People using the service benefited from a staff team who were trained and supported to do their job.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant that most of them were not able to tell us their experiences.

We observed care and reviewed records to help us understand the experiences of people using the service.

Some of the people living at the home were able to indicate their agreement when asked if they liked the staff. One person was overheard to say 'you are kind' to the staff member assisting them.

Staff knew the people living at the home well and had a good understanding of their needs.

People told us that liked Ashdown Nursing Home.

7 December 2010 and 25 February 2011

During a routine inspection

All of the people who live in Ashdown Nursing Home have dementia and are unable to tell us about what it is like to live there. We asked visitors, relatives and visiting health and social care professionals to give feed back on the service they offer. From the feedback received we could see that the service offers professional and personalised care in a homely environment, which is much appreciated by the family and relatives of those that live there.
